Mon Sep 16 16:21:36 UTC 2024: ## New COVID-19 Variant XEC Emerges as a Potential Threat

While the current dominant COVID-19 variant in the US remains KP.3.1.1, a new variant called XEC is gaining attention and could potentially become the next dominant strain. First identified in Germany in June, XEC has spread to several other countries in Europe.

Experts are closely monitoring XEC’s rise as it exhibits traits that could lead to increased transmissibility. While the overall data on XEC is still limited, its potential impact is being closely watched.

Dr. Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, stated that XEC is “definitely taking charge” and needs careful observation. Dr. Elizabeth Hudson, regional chief of infectious diseases for Kaiser Permanente Southern California, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of monitoring XEC’s spread in the coming weeks.

Despite the emergence of new variants, the good news is that the risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 has significantly decreased due to vaccination and prior infections. Updated COVID-19 vaccines are now available, and staying up-to-date with vaccinations remains the best way to protect against severe disease. Free at-home COVID-19 tests will also be available to US households this winter.

While the symptoms of the latest variants remain unchanged, including cough, fever, sore throat, and congestion, the CDC advises vigilance and recommends seeking medical attention if experiencing any of these symptoms.
