**Shillong, Meghalaya:** Kyiek Mukhim, a renowned nurse and midwife who delivered over 1000 babies in the remote Kharang area of East Khasi Hills, passed away on Monday at the age of 88. Mukhim, fondly known as “Kong Kyiek”, dedicated 62 years of her life to serving the community at the Kharang Rural Centre (KRC).

Mukhim, who hailed from a remote village in East Khasi Hills, started her journey at the KRC in 1952 as one of the first students adopted by Annie Margaret Barr, an English-born humanitarian worker who founded the center. After completing her education and nursing training, Mukhim served the community tirelessly, ensuring the safe delivery of countless babies.

Mukhim’s dedication to her work touched the lives of thousands in the surrounding villages of Kharang, Pingwait, Mawlein, Dienglieng, and Nongjrong. She is remembered for her unwavering commitment to providing healthcare in the remote region and her warm, compassionate nature.

Mukhim’s final journey will take place on September 19, 2024, at the Unitarian Church Kharang Cemetery at 12 noon. Her passing marks a significant loss for the community, and her legacy as a dedicated nurse and midwife will continue to inspire generations to come.
