Tue Sep 17 06:51:26 UTC 2024: ## US Seeks to Ban Russian State Media RT, India Remains Unsure

The United States has stepped up its efforts to curb the reach of Russian state media network RT, urging allies and partners to join their campaign against what they call “Russian disinformation.” The US has even proposed revoking accreditations and designating RT journalists under the “Foreign Missions Act.”

However, India has remained noncommittal on the issue. While government officials have dismissed the debate on sanctions as irrelevant to India, former Indian Ambassador to Russia and France Kanwal Sibal criticized the US actions, arguing they damage America’s own values and will be seen as double standards by the Global South.

Sibal pointed out that despite the US government’s claim to support freedom of speech, their actions to curtail and censor Russian media organizations would ultimately lead to further distrust and pressure on India to align with their stance.

Meanwhile, the US has accused RT of being a “de facto arm of Russia’s intelligence apparatus” and has launched a joint diplomatic campaign with the United Kingdom and Canada to counter what they perceive as a threat.

The debate on RT’s role in the international media landscape continues, with some criticizing its coverage as biased and propaganda while others argue that it merely presents a different perspective.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has only heightened the scrutiny of RT and its reporting, adding another layer of complexity to the already contentious relationship between the US and Russia.
