**Sydney, Australia** – TNT Radio, an Australian online radio station known for its controversial content and association with fringe right-wing figures, is shutting down this Friday. The station, launched in 2022 by CEO and host Mike Ryan and Jennifer Squires, promised a platform for “free speech” covering topics like “Climate Crisis, Pandemics, Covid-19 Malfeasance, Big Tech Censorship, Digital Control, Government Tyranny, Corruption, Propaganda, Democracy”.
However, the station has faced significant criticism for its coverage, which frequently included sensationalism and conspiracy theories. Hosts included disgraced Sky News presenter Chris Smith, former politician turned conspiracy blogger George Christensen, and Barnaby Joyce’s wife Vikki Campion. TNT Radio also sponsored events like the Bettina Arndt-organized “Restoring the Presumption of Innocence Conference”, which was set to be headlined by Bruce Lehrmann.
Ryan has confirmed that the station’s closure is due to its investors pulling their funding. Despite employing 75 people at its peak, the station struggled to secure alternative revenue sources due to advertisers’ reluctance to associate with its content. “Because we’re a free speech platform, what we found is that no-one really wants free speech,” Ryan said.
While Ryan acknowledged that TNT Radio had broadcast conspiracy theories, he defended the station’s coverage, including anti-vaccine and heterodox views on international conflicts, claiming that some of their “fantasy” had become “reality”.
The shutdown of TNT Radio highlights the challenges of establishing a successful media platform that prioritizes “free speech” over mainstream appeal. The station’s failure to secure long-term funding suggests that even in a landscape where alternative voices are increasingly valued, there may be limits to what audiences are willing to tolerate, particularly when it comes to controversial and potentially harmful content.
