**New Delhi, India:** India is among several nations actively testing their own digital currencies, known as central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), as a global trend toward replacing physical cash accelerates. According to a new report from the Atlantic Council, a US-based think tank, a staggering 134 countries, representing 98% of the global economy, are exploring digital versions of their currencies, with nearly half in advanced stages of development.
The research, published on Tuesday, reveals that all G20 nations are investigating CBDCs, with 44 countries currently piloting them, up from 36 last year. This surge in interest is driven by a number of factors, including declining cash usage and the rise of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.
**China Leading the Pack with e-CNY**
China has emerged as a frontrunner in the CBDC race, boasting the world’s largest pilot scheme for its e-CNY, or digital yuan. The scheme has seen a nearly fourfold increase in transactions, reaching 7 trillion yuan ($987 billion) in recent months.
**Bahamas, Jamaica, and Nigeria Show Early Success**
While some countries have faced skepticism regarding the adoption of CBDCs, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Nigeria, the only three nations to have fully launched theirs, have seen a significant uptake in usage.
**US Lagging Behind, but Europe Making Strides**
The United States has been slower to embrace a digital dollar, facing strong opposition regarding privacy and security concerns. However, the US has joined a cross-border CBDC project with six other major central banks. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank has launched a multi-year pilot for a digital euro.
**Russia and Iran Join the CBDC Race**
Russia, despite facing international sanctions, has also entered the CBDC arena, with its digital rouble pilot now accepted in the Moscow metro and some petrol stations. Iran is also developing its own digital rial.
**The Future of Money is Digital**
Experts predict that China will likely launch a fully functional e-CNY within the next year. While the US remains hesitant, the global trend towards digital currencies is undeniable, with even the most reluctant nations likely to join the movement in the near future. The rapid adoption of CBDCs promises to reshape the global financial landscape and offer new opportunities for digital innovation.
