**Yellowstone National Park, WY** – In a rare and remarkable occurrence, a grizzly bear mother has been spotted in Yellowstone National Park with an unprecedented litter of five cubs. This is the first time a litter of this size has been documented in the park’s history.
Tour guide Andrea Baratte was lucky enough to capture the mama bear and her brood on video, stating “I’m so glad that I got to document it, otherwise nobody would have believed it.” Nature photographer Stan Mills also managed to capture images of the tired mama bear, noting that “The mother spotted me while I was getting my camera out.”
While biologists have not yet been able to confirm with 100% certainty that all five cubs belong to the same mother, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of adoption. It’s known that bears may abandon their cubs in extreme circumstances, and cases of bears raising cubs that aren’t biologically theirs have been documented.
Frank van Manen, a bear researcher, expressed his excitement, stating “If this was truly a litter of five, it would be the first one recorded in the history of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, for sure.”
For now, visitors and researchers alike are enjoying the captivating images of this remarkable family. The sight of a mama bear nurturing five cubs highlights the fascinating and often surprising nature of wildlife in Yellowstone National Park.
