Country music star Sturgill Simpson made a triumphant return to the stage Saturday night, kicking off his first tour under the “Johnny Blue Skies” moniker at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The show was packed with surprises, including a medley of unexpected covers that delighted the audience.
Simpson and his band, which now features former Midland keyboardist Robbie Crowell, treated fans to renditions of classic rock hits like “L.A. Woman” by The Doors, “Midnight Rider” by the Allman Brothers Band, and “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum. He also dusted off his covers of “The Promise” by When in Rome and “I’d Have to Be Crazy” by Steve Fromholz.
For the grand finale, Simpson closed the show with a powerful rendition of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” seamlessly transitioning into his own song “One for the Road” from his latest album “Passage Du Desir.” The performance showcased Simpson’s impressive vocal range and the band’s tight musical synergy.
“Passage Du Desir,” which translates to “Passage of Desire,” is Simpson’s first album in three years and features a sound that Rolling Stone described as “heavy with heartache, burdened by past mistakes, adrift in impossible dreams, and desperate for relief.” The album has garnered critical acclaim for its raw emotion and introspective lyrics.
Simpson’s tour continues this week with stops in West Calley City, Utah; Bend, Oregon; George, Washington; and Missoula, Montana. Fans can expect more surprises and a captivating performance from one of country music’s most acclaimed artists.
