The death of Ian Bailey, the long-time prime suspect in the 1996 murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork, has not closed the book on this notorious case. Though Bailey was convicted in absentia by French judges in 2019, he died in January at the age of 66 before he could face extradition or trial in Ireland.
Journalist Senan Molony, who was one of the first reporters to cover the murder, has now penned a book, the first published since Bailey’s death, offering a comprehensive and compelling collection of circumstantial evidence against the former journalist. Molony, who was initially drawn to Bailey’s seemingly helpful role in the investigation, points out that Bailey was known to have a history of violence against women. He also had access to information about the crime that was not available to the Gardaí.
The murder of Toscan du Plantier has long been a source of fascination and controversy in Ireland. The case has been the subject of multiple books, television programmes, and podcasts, and former Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin has called it a “terrible stain on our country.”
While this book may not be the final word on the murder, it offers a fresh perspective on the evidence and promises to keep the case in the public eye.
