**Joda, Odisha:** A newly inaugurated flyover in Joda, Keonjhar district, has developed alarming cracks and sinkage just six months after its grand opening, sparking concerns about the quality of construction and the safety of commuters.
The flyover, built at a cost of Rs 250 crore from the District Mineral Foundation (DMF), was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on March 11, 2024. The 3-km long bridge was constructed by Gujarat-based Chevrox Constructions Private Ltd, which had boasted about using the latest technology and claimed a lifespan of over 100 years.
However, the flyover has already begun to show signs of distress. A crater has formed on the approach road, and cracks have appeared on the retaining walls. Loose concrete slabs and protruding iron rods pose a serious threat to commuters’ safety.
The flyover reportedly shakes violently when heavy vehicles pass simultaneously, further adding to the growing anxieties of residents.
“We were promised a durable, safe flyover,” said a local resident. “But this is unacceptable. It’s a huge safety risk, and the government needs to take immediate action to address this.”
Following the incident, Keonjhar Collector Vishal Singh has directed a technical team and OBCCL engineers to inspect the damage and initiate repair work.
While an OBCCL engineer confirmed the presence of cracks, he downplayed the severity, assuring that there is no immediate threat to commuters.
However, locals allege that the flyover was hastily inaugurated ahead of elections without proper inspection, leading to the current situation.
Chevrox Constructions Private Ltd officials were unavailable for comment.
The incident has brought to light the urgent need for stringent quality control measures in infrastructure projects and a thorough investigation into the faulty construction of the Joda flyover.
