Wed Sep 18 14:12:50 UTC 2024: ## “One Nation, One Election” Proposal Sparks Controversy: Opposition Leaders Criticize Move
**New Delhi:** The central cabinet on Wednesday approved the “One Nation, One Election” proposal, a plan to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and all state assemblies. This move has been met with strong opposition from 15 opposition parties led by the Congress, who see it as a ploy by the Modi government to manipulate the electoral system.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the proposal, calling it an attempt to mislead the people. He stated that “One Nation, One Election” is impractical and will not be accepted by the public. He believes that the proposal is aimed at diverting attention from the upcoming Haryana elections, where the Congress is campaigning actively.
Echoing the sentiments, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi denounced the proposal, stating that it would destroy the fabric of federalism and compromise democracy. He argued that the proposal undermines the fundamental principles of the Indian Constitution and serves the interests of the BJP, particularly Modi and Amit Shah.
Owaisi believes that frequent elections promote democratic accountability and that holding simultaneous elections would necessitate constant campaigning, which benefits the ruling party. He emphasized that multi-level elections, including local and municipal polls, are crucial for a healthy democracy.
The “One Nation, One Election” proposal has drawn criticism from various political parties and stakeholders, who believe it will have a detrimental impact on India’s diverse electoral system.
