Wed Sep 18 07:55:53 UTC 2024: ## Young Chartered Accountant Dies After Just Four Months at EY, Mother Blames Workload and Culture

**Pune, India** – The tragic death of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old chartered accountant who passed away in July just four months after joining EY’s tax and statutory audit department in Pune, has sparked concerns about the company’s work culture. Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, has publicly accused EY of contributing to her daughter’s death due to excessive workload and a harsh working environment.

In a letter addressed to EY Chairman Rajiv Memani, Anita detailed how Anna, despite facing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress stemming from her workload, was pressured to work late nights and weekends. She claims Anna was told “You can work at night; that’s what we all do” in response to her concerns.

The letter further alleges that Anna was given additional tasks beyond her official duties, often verbally, and was expected to work beyond her contracted hours without being compensated. Anita also states that a senior leader joked at an office party about how difficult it would be for Anna to work under her manager, a statement that unfortunately proved to be a harbinger of the pressure she would face.

The letter concludes by criticizing EY for not attending Anna’s funeral or offering condolences to her family. Anita believes EY has a responsibility to prioritize employee well-being and calls for a review of its work culture.

This incident is not isolated, as recent studies highlight the rising issue of burnout in India, with 62% of workers reporting experiencing it. Earlier this year, a McKinsey consultant in Maharashtra also took his own life due to workplace pressure.

While EY has not yet issued an official statement, the company’s silence has further ignited concerns about its work environment. This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unchecked workload and a lack of support for employees in high-pressure environments.
