Wed Sep 18 16:18:28 UTC 2024: ## India Approves ‘One Nation, One Election’ – Simultaneous Polls for Lok Sabha, State Assemblies and Local Bodies

**New Delhi, India** – The Indian government has taken a major step towards holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha (national parliament), state assemblies, and local bodies under the “One Nation, One Election” framework. This decision, announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday, follows a recommendation by a high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

The committee’s report, submitted to President Droupadi Murmu in March, recommends constitutional amendments to enable this system. A bill to this effect is expected to be introduced during the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

The “One Nation, One Election” model, last practiced in India during the 1960s, aims to address concerns regarding the frequent elections burdening the government and disrupting public services. Proponents argue that holding elections for all tiers of government simultaneously will streamline the process, save costs, and prevent policy paralysis.

However, the proposal has also faced criticism, with concerns raised about overshadowing regional issues, requiring significant constitutional changes, and potential logistical challenges.

The committee recommends a two-phase approach, with the first phase focusing on simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The second phase, within 100 days, would encompass elections for municipalities and panchayats.

The implementation of “One Nation, One Election” will require the approval of at least half of India’s states and will necessitate significant logistical planning by the Election Commission of India.

While the decision has been met with mixed reactions, it marks a significant move towards streamlining India’s electoral process and could potentially impact the political landscape in the years to come.
