The Modi government has taken a significant step towards implementing the long-awaited “One Nation, One Election” policy. The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal, based on the recommendations of a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. This move, announced by Home Minister Amit Shah, aims to hold all state and national elections simultaneously within the next five years.
The concept of simultaneous elections, initially proposed in the 1980s, aims to bring multiple benefits. Advocates argue that holding elections together will significantly reduce costs, estimated to be over Rs 60,000 crore for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This cost includes the Election Commission’s expenses and those incurred by political parties. Additionally, frequent deployment and relocation of security personnel during elections would also be minimized.
The “One Nation, One Election” policy is expected to improve administrative effectiveness and potentially increase voter turnout. Proponents believe that holding elections simultaneously will promote development, strengthen democracy, and unite the nation by aligning national aspirations with those of India, that is Bharat.
The One Nation, One Election Bill is likely to be introduced during the next winter session of Parliament. The government has formed an implementation group to ensure the plan is carried out effectively. While the policy has its supporters, concerns regarding its impact on the democratic process and potential logistical challenges remain to be addressed.
