**Abuja, Nigeria** – The Nigerian government has called for a collaborative effort with the China Media Group (CMG) to combat the rising threat of misinformation and disinformation. This call was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, during an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China.
The Minister, represented by Suleiman Haruna, highlighted the importance of media outlets in promoting understanding and fostering progress. He commended CMG for its commitment to delivering accurate news and its positive influence on both Nigeria and China.
Idris emphasized the need for balance in reporting, showcasing national achievements while also inspiring hope and aspirations for future growth. He acknowledged the challenges posed by misinformation in the digital age and stressed the need for cooperation to address this issue.
The Minister pointed to the recent Forum of China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) where Nigeria and China signed agreements for media exchange and collaboration, furthering their partnership with CMG. He also highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to press freedom and its vital role in Nigerian society.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, expressed his love for Nigeria and his belief in the continued strengthening of relations between the two countries. He highlighted the success of President Tinubu’s recent visit to China and the numerous bilateral agreements signed.
Both officials emphasized the importance of media cooperation between Nigeria and China in tackling misinformation and promoting mutual understanding. This partnership aims to leverage modern communication channels available in both nations to combat the growing threat of disinformation and contribute to a more informed and stable global environment.
