Wed Sep 18 02:21:35 UTC 2024: ## Carlton’s Controversial Subbing of Matt Kennedy Sparks Departure Rumors

Carlton midfielder Matt Kennedy has been given permission to explore his options for the 2024 season, following a dramatic and emotional end to his 2023 campaign.

The 27-year-old, who flew to Brisbane for the Blues’ finals clash against the Lions despite the birth of his first child two days prior, was controversially subbed out before half-time. Kennedy had also been hospitalized in the lead-up to the birth.

His manager, David Trotter, confirmed that several clubs have assumed Kennedy’s possible departure is a direct result of the Blues’ decision to sub him out, but clarified that the club has been having “honest chats” with the midfielder about his role and future throughout the year.

While Kennedy is happy at Carlton and would be open to staying, the club acknowledged that if a Victorian club presented an opportunity for him to play as an inside midfielder, they would be open to a move.

Kennedy is one of three Carlton players given permission to look elsewhere, alongside Lewis Young (contracted until 2026) and Matt Owies (out of contract and seeking interest).

However, Trotter emphasized that Kennedy has not expressed any desire to leave the club at this stage.

As Carlton seeks to bolster their roster for next season, they are in pursuit of GWS Giants defender Nick Haynes and Port Adelaide’s Dan Houston. They have already delisted five players, with former high-priced recruit Jack Martin linked to Geelong.
