**Washington, D.C. -** Following the second assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov suggested that the incident is a consequence of the United States’ support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.
“It is not us who should be thinking, it is the U.S. intelligence services who should be thinking,” Peskov retorted when asked about the Kremlin’s stance on the incident. “In any case, playing with fire has its consequences,” he added.
The alleged assailant, Ryan Wesley Routh, is known for his fervent support of Ukraine and has reportedly expressed a belief that U.S. aid to Ukraine would dwindle under a second Trump administration.
Routh, 58, has openly advocated for Ukraine’s cause, even volunteering to fight for the country. He’s been vocal on social media and in interviews, stating his belief that the conflict is a “black and white” struggle between “good versus evil.”
While Routh has claimed ties to the Ukrainian military, the International Legion and the Azov Brigade have both denied any association with him. Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation has also labelled the incident a “topic for Russian propaganda.”
Despite distancing themselves from the alleged assailant, Ukrainian officials have expressed concern about the narrative surrounding the incident. The Azov Brigade, in particular, has voiced worry that the connection to Routh is being used to further Russian propaganda.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has indicated that Russia is closely watching the situation in the United States, highlighting the “tense” political climate and escalating “political struggle” in the country.
