**SINGAPORE:** A new genetic screening programme, known as the PREDICT programme, has been launched by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in partnership with Temasek Foundation. The free pilot programme, running from 2024 to 2027, aims to help couples identify if they are carriers of severe recessive genetic disorders that could be passed down to their children.
This first-of-its-kind programme in Asia covers over 80 genetic disorders relevant to the Asian population, exceeding the scope of current public carrier screening offered in Singapore. The programme addresses a critical gap in existing tests, which often miss over 25% of severe recessive disorders common among Asians.
The screening process involves a blood test or cheek swab, with results discussed in a counselling session. Couples identified as carriers can then make informed decisions about their family planning. The pilot targets to screen around 40,000 eligible couples, and based on its success, KKH will assess how to scale the program by 2027.
“This proactive approach to family planning can help couples be more well-prepared,” said Mr. Kee Kirk Chuen, the head of health and well-being at Temasek Foundation.
The programme is open to couples with at least one partner who is a Singaporean or permanent resident. Screenings can be conducted before or during pregnancy, and couples can be referred to the programme during obstetric visits at KKH or self-refer by emailing carrierscreening [at] singhealth.com.sg or contacting them via WhatsApp at 6394 3998.
