**COPENHAGEN, Denmark** – A unique shamanic ceremony, led by Korean American mudang (shaman) Helena Soholm, brought together individuals from across the globe in Copenhagen, Denmark, fostering healing and connection through ancestral energy.
The ceremony, held at BaneGaarden, attracted a diverse group of participants including Korean adoptees, Indigenous peoples, and individuals seeking ancestral connection. Among those present were Jannie Jung Westermann, president of Korea Klubben, who has dedicated her life to uncovering the truth behind the often unethical practices surrounding Korean adoptions; Mai Soon Young Øvlisen, a Danish Korean adoptee who incorporates traditional Korean folk music and shamanism in her band; and Kâlánguak Absalonsen, an Inuit woman reclaiming her heritage after being separated from her family during colonization.
The ceremony incorporated elements of Korean shamanism, Inuit tradition, and Western psychology, creating a powerful space for participants to explore their ancestral roots and personal journeys. Soholm emphasized the importance of experiencing shamanism firsthand, stating, “You learn about it by experiencing it.”
Through a series of rituals, including a pre-ceremony offering, drumming, and a guided trance, participants were able to access their ancestral energy and connect with their past. This experience provided a sense of belonging and healing for many.
For Kâlánguak, the ceremony was particularly significant, allowing her to receive the message from her Inuit ancestors, “Fly high, don’t let them drag you down.” She shared that the experience helped her release the pain she carried from being separated from her family and allowed her to embrace her mother’s love.
“This ceremony gave me a sense of not being alone,” said Mai Soon Young, highlighting the sense of community and shared experience fostered by the event.
Soholm, who is also a transpersonal psychologist, integrates Western psychological theories with Indigenous knowledge systems to facilitate healing and growth in modern society. She emphasizes the importance of creating sacred space, regardless of location, for those seeking to reconnect with their ancestors and cultural heritage.
This unique ceremony provided a platform for healing, connection, and cultural understanding, demonstrating the power of shamanic practices to bridge cultural divides and facilitate personal transformation.
