**Paris, France** – Six-time Paralympian Patrick Anderson, widely considered the greatest wheelchair basketball player of all time, is once again leading Team Canada in the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games.
Anderson, who first encountered the sport as a child at a sports camp, credits wheelchair basketball with giving him a sense of control and freedom. “It was the first time I really felt like I was in control,” Anderson said. “I had independence again, freedom of movement and joy… that feeling of joy has never been purer and sharper, and in some ways, it hasn’t left me all these decades later.”
Anderson has led Team Canada to numerous victories over the years, including three gold medals and a silver. He is particularly proud of how the sport has evolved since his first time on the court.
“When wheelchair basketball began in the 1940s, the military veteran players used their everyday chairs,” Anderson explains. “But if you stream a basketball game at the Paralympics today, you’ll notice a number of differences between the chairs used on and off the court.”
Today’s wheelchairs are highly specialized, with lower seat backs, angled wheels, and additional wheels for stability and maneuverability. These advancements, coupled with the individual customization of each chair, have significantly improved athletes’ performance.
Vicky Tolfrey, a sport scientist at Loughborough University, describes the advancements in wheelchair design as a “bespoke, individualized matching of the impairment, to the chair, to the requirements of their position.”
This level of customization is vital, as the needs of athletes vary greatly between sports and even within the same sport. For example, a wheelchair tennis player requires a different chair than a long-distance wheelchair racer.
“It’s always come from asking the athletes: What do they want? What do they need to know?” Tolfrey says, highlighting the importance of athlete input in the development of wheelchair sports technology.
As Patrick Anderson and Team Canada take the court in the 2024 Paralympic Games, they are not only showcasing their exceptional athleticism, but also the impressive progress in wheelchair sports technology that has been driven by both innovation and athlete-driven feedback.
