Tue Sep 17 06:58:37 UTC 2024: ## Antony Faces Fight for Manchester United Spot, Ten Hag Insists He Can “Bounce Back”
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has defended Antony, stating that the Brazilian winger can “bounce back” from his struggles to secure a starting position. The 24-year-old, signed from Ajax for a hefty £80.6 million in 2022, has only featured once this season – a late substitute appearance in the Premier League loss to Brighton. Reports suggested Antony was looking to move on loan.
Despite this, Ten Hag has reiterated that Antony needs to “fight for his position” and compete with the likes of Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford, who are currently performing well.
“He has to earn the right in training,” Ten Hag said, acknowledging Antony’s impatience to play.
Meanwhile, several United players are recovering from injury, including Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, and Victor Lindelof. However, all three could be available for the upcoming league game against Crystal Palace. Luke Shaw (calf) is also progressing but not yet ready.
New signing Manuel Ugarte is likely to make his first start for United after coming off the bench for his debut against Southampton.
While the Carabao Cup tie against Barnsley is on Tuesday, Ten Hag emphasized the importance of all competitions, stating, “In top football, at the end of the day it’s about winning trophies and to hit the targets.”
United currently sits 10th in the Premier League after four games.
