**Magdeburg, Germany:** US chipmaker Intel has announced a two-year delay in the construction of a semiconductor factory in Magdeburg, Germany, citing cost-saving measures amid a challenging market environment. The decision has sparked a debate within the German government over the allocation of funds intended for the project.
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger attributed the postponement to the company’s need to “create a more competitive cost structure” and achieve a $10 billion savings target. He stated that the project, along with a similar one in Poland, will be paused based on anticipated market demand. The Magdeburg factory was estimated to cost €30 billion and create 3,000 jobs.
The delay has prompted German Finance Minister Christian Lindner, a member of the neoliberal Free Democrats (FDP), to call for the repurposing of subsidies earmarked for the Intel project towards plugging a €12 billion federal budget gap. “All funds not required for Intel must be reserved in the federal budget to reduce unresolved financial issues,” he stated on X, formerly Twitter.
However, Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the Green Party has countered, arguing that the funds should be “used sensibly and carefully for the good of the country.” Sources close to Habeck have indicated that the subsidies are intended for the off-budget climate and transformation fund and cannot be redirected to the federal budget.
The debate highlights the complex political landscape within Germany’s ruling coalition. While Intel’s delay is driven by economic pressures, the repurposing of funds intended for the project could have significant ramifications for Germany’s climate goals and industrial development. The government is expected to discuss the issue further in the coming weeks.
