Tue Sep 17 06:29:52 UTC 2024: ## Drinking Water Won’t Cure Your Hangover: New Study Debunks Common Belief

A long-held belief that chugging water after a night of heavy drinking can prevent a hangover has been debunked by new research from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The study, which analyzed data from three previous studies, found that while dehydration is a factor in hangovers, it’s not the main culprit.

Researchers divided participants into two groups: those who drank water before bed after drinking, and those who didn’t. Surprisingly, both groups experienced similar levels of nausea, headaches, and exhaustion the next morning.

“Dehydration is not the primary cause of hangover symptoms,” explained Dr. Joris Verster, the study’s lead author. “Drinking water may help against thirst and a dry mouth, but it won’t take away the misery, the headache, and the nausea.”

The study highlights that alcohol’s impact on the body goes beyond dehydration. It triggers hormonal changes that lead to water and electrolyte loss, causing the common symptom of thirst. However, this effect is relatively short-lived compared to the longer-lasting effects of oxidative stress and inflammation caused by alcohol.

These reactions are responsible for the significant discomfort associated with hangovers, including headaches. Simply drinking water won’t address these underlying causes, the study concluded.

Further research shows that hangovers tend to worsen with age as liver function declines and the body’s water content decreases.

While no proven cure for hangovers currently exists, the study emphasizes that the most effective way to avoid them is to drink less or abstain from alcohol entirely.
