**NAYPYIDAW** – Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia this year, has left a trail of devastation in Myanmar, claiming at least 226 lives and affecting over 631,000 people. The storm’s torrential rains have caused widespread flooding, damaging infrastructure, crops, and homes in 84 townships across the country, including the capital Naypyidaw.
The disaster has further strained Myanmar’s already limited resources, exacerbated by the ongoing civil war. Rescue and relief efforts are hampered by damaged infrastructure, ongoing clashes, and a lack of funds.
The junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, has made a rare request for foreign aid, recognizing the overwhelming scale of the devastation. India has already sent 10 tonnes of aid, including food, clothing, and medicine. However, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that hundreds more people are missing, and the death toll is likely to rise.
While Myanmar grapples with the aftermath of Yagi, neighboring Thailand continues to face heavy rains and flooding, with at least 45 deaths since mid-August. The floods have affected approximately 28,000 households across 13 provinces.
In Vietnam, Typhoon Yagi, described as the country’s most powerful storm in decades, has killed over 350 people and caused US$1.6 billion in damage. The storm serves as a stark reminder of the increasing intensity of tropical cyclones due to global warming.
Myanmar’s meteorology department has issued warnings for residents living near the Sittaung River, which has exceeded its danger level by five feet. Heavy rains are also forecast for the next 24 hours in three provinces, including war-torn Rakhine State.
