**New Delhi, India** – The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has launched an investigation into alleged antitrust violations by major smartphone companies, including Samsung and Xiaomi, accusing them of colluding with e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart.
The investigation found that five smartphone companies had exclusive agreements with Amazon and Flipkart, restricting the launch of certain products to only these platforms in India. This practice, according to the CCI, stifled competition and harmed consumers by limiting their choices.
“Exclusivity in business is anathema,” said G.V. Siva Prasad, the CCI’s additional director general. “Not only is it against free and fair competition but also against the interest of consumers.”
Further allegations against Amazon and Flipkart include favoring certain sellers and listings, providing unrealistic discounts, and making it difficult for competitors to participate in the market. These practices, the CCI contends, have significantly impacted both online and offline businesses in India, which are disadvantaged by the late availability of new smartphone models.
The investigation, which was triggered by a complaint from the Confederation of All India Traders, is still ongoing. The CCI has requested financial statements from Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, Realme, and Motorola, and is open to hearing objections from the implicated companies.
The allegations come at a time when India’s e-commerce sector is experiencing rapid growth, expected to reach $160 billion by 2028. The CCI’s investigation seeks to ensure fair competition and prevent monopolistic practices that could hinder the growth of the industry and limit consumer choice.
