Mon Sep 16 16:21:11 UTC 2024: ## West Bengal Junior Doctors Reach Stalemate with Chief Minister Over Five-Point Demands

**KOLKATA, INDIA** – Following a week of protests and a stalemate, junior doctors in West Bengal finally held talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday evening regarding their five-point demands. The meeting, which took place at the CM’s residence in Kolkata, was attended by a delegation of over 30 doctors, as well as high-ranking officials including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, and Minister of State for Health.

The doctors’ demands center around justice for a 31-year-old junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in August. The tragic incident sparked nationwide outrage and prompted the doctors to demand the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, senior health officials, and a guarantee for a safer work environment.

While the doctors expressed their intention to stand firm on their demands, Banerjee expressed hope for a positive outcome from the meeting. However, the doctors have stated that they will reconvene after the meeting to discuss its results and announce their next steps.

The Supreme Court, which is hearing the case of the hospital suo moto, had previously exhorted the junior doctors to return to work by September 10th, threatening legal action if they did not comply. Despite the Supreme Court’s directive, the doctors maintained their cease work and remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice for their deceased colleague.

The meeting between the doctors and Banerjee marks a crucial step in resolving the ongoing dispute. While the outcome of the meeting remains uncertain, the conversation provides a much-needed platform for dialogue and potentially a path forward towards a resolution.
