A new poll from the Annenberg Public Policy Center reveals a growing demand for reform within the U.S. Supreme Court, fueled by recent ethics scandals and a decline in public trust. The poll, conducted across all political viewpoints, found strong support for imposing term limits on justices, ending their lifetime appointments. A whopping 68% of Americans support this change, with even higher support among Democrats (79%) and Republicans (58%).
Further, 77% of Americans favor establishing a formal ethics code for justices, allowing for investigations of ethical violations. This support transcends party lines, with only 8% opposing the proposal.
The poll also highlights a growing dissatisfaction with the Court’s recent decisions, with 47% of voters supporting a mechanism to allow the public to overturn controversial rulings in national elections.
These calls for reform come at a time when the Supreme Court’s approval rating has plummeted to 43%, marking a 15-point drop from just four years ago. This decline coincides with a series of controversial rulings and ethics scandals involving justices.
Justice Elena Kagan, recognizing the public sentiment, has voiced support for a binding ethics code with an independent enforcement mechanism. Similarly, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has acknowledged the need for such a system, arguing that lower court judges are already subject to similar rules.
The public scrutiny surrounding the Supreme Court’s ethics and its recent decisions has sparked a national conversation about the institution’s role in American democracy. The poll’s findings reveal a growing demand for transparency, accountability, and reform to restore public trust in the nation’s highest court.
