Tue Sep 17 10:23:00 UTC 2024: ## Iran’s Hypocrisy: Deporting Afghan Refugees While Preaching Islamic Unity

**Tehran, September 17, 2024:** Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has come under fire for his blatant hypocrisy, rallying Muslims worldwide under the banner of “Islamic Ummah” while simultaneously deporting millions of Afghan refugees, many of whom are Muslims.

Khamenei’s call for unity among Muslims comes amidst a backdrop of his government’s harsh treatment of Afghan refugees in Iran. While denouncing India as an “enemy of Islam” for its alleged mistreatment of Muslims, Khamenei conveniently ignores the plight of his own co-religionists fleeing war and seeking refuge in Iran.

Iran has deported over 1.3 million Afghan refugees in the last year, with plans to deport another 2 million. This, despite sharing cultural and linguistic similarities with Afghanistan. Afghan refugees are labelled “illegal foreigners” and deemed a burden on the Iranian economy, with the Iranian authorities turning a blind eye to their desperate situation.

The hypocrisy is further evident in the construction of a 74-kilometer concrete wall along the Iran-Afghanistan border, topped with barbed wire, aimed at preventing Afghan refugees from entering Iran. This starkly contradicts Khamenei’s rhetoric of Islamic unity and sheds light on Iran’s nationalist approach to its refugee policy.

Meanwhile, Iranian authorities have targeted activists and journalists raising concerns about the treatment of Afghan refugees, with threats and intimidation silencing dissent.

The stark contrast between Khamenei’s public pronouncements and his government’s actions has drawn criticism from India, which has urged Iran to “look at its own record” before commenting on the treatment of minorities in other countries.

India, with its significant Muslim population, faces similar accusations from Iran, yet it provides its citizens with access to welfare and freedoms enjoyed by all communities.

This hypocrisy, coupled with Iran’s increasing intervention in regional affairs, has strained relations between India and Iran. While both nations share strategic partnerships, such as the Chabahar port, the ongoing rift threatens to destabilize the region.

The situation exposes the selective application of the concept of “Ummah,” where Iranian leadership uses it to bolster its position as the leader of the Muslim world while turning a blind eye to the suffering of its own people.
