**West Palm Beach, FL** – Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, has been arrested in connection with a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course. Routh was found armed with an AK-47-style rifle roughly 400 yards from Trump, leading to his arrest.
A former neighbor of Routh, who lived near him in Greensboro, North Carolina, expressed disbelief at the incident, describing Routh as a man with a history of firearms obsession and strange behavior. The neighbor stated that Routh owned an extensive collection of weapons, a fact that made many in the community uneasy.
“I’ve seen the guns myself, and, yeah, they had a lot of guns and stuff over there,” the neighbor told FOX 8 News. “A lot of people were afraid of him back in the day.”
Routh’s son, Oran, also expressed shock at his father’s arrest, stating that he was unaware of his father’s travel to Florida and believed he was still in Hawaii. He denied knowledge of his father owning a gun and described him as a hard worker and a good father.
Public records revealed that Routh has a history of criminal charges, including two incidents in 2002 involving possession of a weapon of mass destruction. In one incident, he pleaded guilty after being involved in a standoff with police during a traffic stop.
In recent years, Routh volunteered to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia, even traveling to Kyiv in 2022. He also published a book on Amazon expressing disillusionment with the situation in Ukraine and criticism of democracy, writing about feeling guilty for electing a “brainless president” and stating, “You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment.”
The Secret Service agent assigned to Trump’s protection noticed Routh holding a rifle behind a chain-link fence at the golf course. The agent fired at Routh, but missed. Routh fled, leaving behind a rifle, bulletproof plates, and a GoPro camera, which authorities believe was intended to record the incident.
Routh was apprehended on Interstate 95 and arrested without incident. The FBI is leading the investigation, and local charges may be filed. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation.
