Mon Sep 16 15:12:16 UTC 2024: ## Russia Evacuates Border Villages Amid Counteroffensive

**Kursk, Russia** – The governor of Russia’s Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, announced on Monday that villages within a 15-kilometer radius of the Ukrainian border are being evacuated. This comes after Russia launched a major counteroffensive aimed at pushing back Ukrainian forces that had seized territory in the region.

The mandatory evacuation order covers settlements in the Rylsky and Khomutovsky districts. Authorities urged residents to take their belongings and pets, citing past evacuations where some left animals behind.

Over 150,000 people have already fled their homes in the Kursk region since Ukraine began its offensive on August 6th. The attack, which marked a significant escalation of the conflict, caught Russia off guard and prompted a swift response with reinforcements.

Moscow claims to have regained control of multiple villages, including Uspenovka and Borki, as part of the counteroffensive. Ukraine, however, had hoped its incursion would slow down Russia’s advances in the eastern Donbas region. While acknowledging that Moscow’s progress has been slowed, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the situation on the eastern front remains challenging.

Meanwhile, Kyiv has requested the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to visit the parts of the Kursk region under Ukrainian control. Ukraine seeks to highlight its adherence to humanitarian law and contrast its actions with those of Russia. However, the Kremlin has dismissed the request as a “pure provocation.”

This latest development further underscores the escalating tensions and volatile situation along the Ukrainian border. As both sides continue to engage in a fierce battle for control, the humanitarian impact on civilians caught in the crossfire remains a pressing concern.
