**West Palm Beach, FL** – Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was charged in federal court Monday with two gun-related offenses in connection with an alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred Sunday at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, where Trump was golfing.

According to court documents, Routh was found to be in the vicinity of the golf course for nearly 12 hours on Sunday, leading up to the alleged attempt. A Secret Service agent reportedly spotted a gun protruding from a fence and fired upon a suspect hiding in the bushes. The suspect, later identified as Routh, fled but left behind an AK-47-style rifle, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera.

Routh was arrested shortly after in Martin County, driving a Nissan with stolen license plates. He faces charges of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number, offenses carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Routh’s political views are described as varied, with social media posts indicating support for both Trump in 2016 and later for President Biden and Vice President Harris. He was a passionate supporter of Ukraine, even going so far as to co-author a self-published e-book on the country’s war effort.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state will conduct its own investigation into the incident, separate from the federal investigation.

The investigation into the alleged assassination attempt is ongoing, and further charges are possible. Routh is scheduled for a bond hearing on September 23 and an arraignment on September 30.
