Tue Sep 17 12:54:50 UTC 2024: ## Opposition Parties Condemn ‘One Nation, One Election’ Proposal, Calling it a BJP Gimmick
**New Delhi, India** – The opposition has launched a fierce critique against the Narendra Modi government’s proposed “One Nation, One Election” policy, labeling it a BJP gimmick and a move that is constitutionally impossible. The proposal, which aims to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, has been met with strong disapproval from prominent opposition figures.
Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, a prominent Congress leader, stated that the policy would require at least five constitutional amendments and that the Modi government lacks the necessary majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to pass such amendments.
TMC MP Derek O’Brien echoed these sentiments, calling it “just another gimmick” from the BJP, while CPI general secretary D Raja urged the government to ensure a level-playing field for all political parties.
The backlash comes after reports surfaced indicating that the Modi government plans to implement this policy during its current term. Prime Minister Modi himself has advocated for simultaneous elections, highlighting the disruption caused by frequent elections and their potential impact on development initiatives.
A high-level panel headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind has recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as a first step, followed by synchronized local body polls within 100 days. Separately, the Law Commission is reportedly considering recommending simultaneous polls for all three tiers of government starting in 2029, with provisions for a unity government in case of hung houses or no-confidence motions.
While the government pushes for this policy, the opposition remains steadfast in its condemnation, viewing it as an attempt by the BJP to consolidate its power and potentially disadvantage opposition parties.
