Tue Sep 17 14:54:39 UTC 2024: ## Nipah Virus Claims Second Life in Kerala, 151 Under Observation

**MALAPPURAM, INDIA** – A 24-year-old student in Kerala, India, has succumbed to the Nipah virus, marking the second death from the deadly pathogen in the state since July. Following the student’s death, 151 individuals who had contact with the victim are currently under observation to prevent further spread of the virus.

The student, who exhibited fever symptoms on September 5th, passed away five days later. Five other individuals have also reportedly displayed early signs of Nipah infection.

The Nipah virus, classified as a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO), poses a significant public health concern. It spreads through contact with bodily fluids from infected bats, pigs, or humans, causing severe fever and brain swelling.

The virus was first identified in 1999 and resurfaced in Kerala in 2018, causing 21 fatalities out of 23 infected individuals. The recent deaths highlight the urgent need for a vaccine and treatment, as no effective measures currently exist.

The WHO’s warnings and the recurring outbreaks in Kerala underscore the necessity for global cooperation and research into preventative measures against this potentially pandemic-causing virus.
