**Altadena, CA** – Yan M Wang, architect and founder of Cover Architecture, has designed a unique accessory dwelling unit (ADU) for his mother on his property in Altadena, California. The 620-square-foot structure, aptly named “Moongate,” features a striking circular opening that acts as both a gateway and a design element, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese architecture.

The ADU, built between the main house and the street, is divided into two volumes: a larger living space on the right and a narrow storage area on the left. Both are clad in white, creating a minimalist contrast to the 1961 ranch-style home on the property.

The highlight of the design is the sloped partition wall that partially obscures the living volume. The wall features a large circular opening, creating a “Moongate” effect that allows glimpses into the dwelling while offering privacy. The wall also creates a shaded patio area with seating, providing a comfortable outdoor space.

Inside, the ADU features a cozy kitchen and living area, a bedroom, a bathroom, and a small office. The interior design follows the minimalist aesthetic, using Baltic birch plywood millwork, light grey Pietra Artica marble for the kitchen counter, and onyx marble for the bathroom vanity. Skylights and a back patio opening to a courtyard further enhance the connection to the outdoors.

The Moongate ADU is not only a beautiful and functional space but also serves a practical purpose. Wang designed the ADU to allow his mother and her partner to live closer to the family after retirement. The design, with its three interconnected structures, fosters a sense of connection between generations while allowing for both shared and private spaces.

The project is a testament to the growing popularity of ADUs in California and other states, where revised zoning laws encourage higher density in urban and suburban areas. Moongate is a creative and stylish example of how ADUs can offer both functionality and a sense of community.
