The creator of the immensely popular mobile game Flappy Bird, Dong Nguyen, has denied any involvement in the upcoming revival of the game.
Nguyen took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that he had not sold any rights to the game and is not associated with the project in any way. He also stated that he does not support cryptocurrency, a statement likely directed at Michael Roberts, who is leading the revival under the “Flappy Bird Foundation.” Roberts is also the head of a cryptocurrency company, 1208 Productions.
The original Flappy Bird, a simple game where players tap the screen to guide a bird through a series of obstacles, became a global sensation in 2014, generating millions of downloads and reportedly earning Nguyen $50,000 a day in ad revenue. However, the game’s sudden success overwhelmed Nguyen, leading him to remove the game from app stores in 2014.
The new version of Flappy Bird, which is set to launch in 2025 for iOS and Android, promises to add new characters and gameplay modes. The game will remain free-to-play.
While the revival has sparked excitement among fans, it remains unclear how the game will perform without the involvement of its original creator.
