Beirut, Lebanon – Renowned Lebanese novelist Elias Khoury, a prominent figure in Arab literature and a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, passed away on Sunday at the age of 76. Khoury, who had been battling illness for several months, was admitted and discharged from the hospital repeatedly over the past year.
Khoury’s prolific career spanned several decades, producing numerous works in Arabic that explored themes of collective memory, war, and exile. His works, translated into numerous languages including French, English, German, Hebrew, and Spanish, gained international recognition.
One of his most celebrated novels, “Gate of the Sun,” tells the poignant story of Palestinian refugees forced from their homes during the 1948 war that coincided with Israel’s creation. This event, known as the Nakba (“catastrophe”) in Arabic, displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
Khoury also wrote extensively about Lebanon’s devastating 1975-1990 civil war, particularly in his novels “Little Mountain” and “Yalo.” Born in Beirut in 1948, Khoury pursued his education at the Lebanese University and later at the University of Paris, earning a PhD in social history.
Throughout his life, Khoury remained a vocal advocate for the Palestinian cause. He served as co-managing editor of the PLO-linked Palestinian Affairs magazine from 1975 to 1979 alongside poet Mahmoud Darwish. He also led the cultural sections of several prominent Lebanese newspapers and taught literature at prestigious institutions like Columbia University in New York.
Despite his recent health struggles, Khoury remained dedicated to his writing, even publishing articles from his hospital bed. In his last piece, titled “A Year of Pain,” he reflected on his time in hospital, drawing parallels with the ongoing Israeli conflict in Gaza.
“Gaza and Palestine have been brutally bombarded for almost a year now, but they stand steadfast and unshakable,” Khoury wrote. “A model from which I have learned to love life every day.”
Elias Khoury’s legacy will be remembered not only for his literary contributions but also for his unwavering commitment to the Palestinian cause, leaving a lasting impact on both Arabic literature and the international community.
