**Dry Tortugas, FL** – The SpaceX Polaris Dawn crew, including billionaire Jared Isaacman, successfully splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday morning, marking the end of a historic mission that included the first-ever private spacewalk.
The five-day orbital mission saw Isaacman, the mission commander and founder of Shift4 Payments, become the first non-professional astronaut to perform a spacewalk. Along with fellow crew members Sarah Gillis, Anna Menon, and Scott Poteet, Isaacman spent 15 minutes outside the Dragon capsule, testing new spacesuit designs.
“We are mission complete,” Isaacman radioed mission control upon the capsule’s safe landing.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk celebrated the crew’s return, tweeting, “Welcome back to Earth.” The mission aimed to test new spacesuit technology and conduct the first commercial spacewalk, highlighting the growing role of private companies in space exploration.
The Polaris Dawn mission has also drawn attention for its philanthropic goal of raising $200 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Isaacman has stated his desire to see a future where space travel is accessible to all, and he believes conquering childhood cancer is an important step towards that future.
The successful completion of the Polaris Dawn mission marks another milestone in the evolution of private space exploration, showcasing the potential for commercial ventures to contribute to scientific advancement and inspire future generations.
