**WASHINGTON** – Sen. JD Vance, former President Donald Trump’s running mate, has retracted his August statement that Trump would veto a federal abortion ban. Vance clarified on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” that he and Trump had never discussed the matter.
This backtrack follows Trump’s own assertion during Tuesday’s debate with Vice President Kamala Harris that he had never discussed with Vance how he would handle an abortion ban. Trump emphasized that he didn’t “think he [Vance] was speaking for me.”
The former president also expressed skepticism about any federal abortion ban passing Congress, regardless of whether it’s a Republican or Democratic initiative. He argued that even Vice President Harris wouldn’t be able to secure the necessary votes to codify Roe v. Wade, stating, “She can’t get the vote. She won’t even come close to it.”
Vance echoed Trump’s sentiments, characterizing the notion of a federal abortion ban as a “ridiculous hypothetical.” He went on to say that, in his view, a national abortion ban wouldn’t garner enough support to pass the Senate, estimating only 10 out of 100 senators would vote in favor. Both Trump and Vance reiterated their stance that abortion policy should be determined at the state level.
