**Bucharest, Romania** – The U.S. State Department has approved a $7.2 billion (€6.5 billion) Foreign Military Sale (FMS) for Romania’s purchase of 32 F-35 Lightning II fighter jets. This marks the most expensive defense deal in Romania’s history, furthering the country’s commitment to strengthening its military capabilities in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The deal, which includes a spare engine and related equipment, was announced by the State Department as vital for improving Romania’s ability to defend itself and participate in regional security missions. It also emphasizes the importance of interoperability with the United States and other NATO allies.
While no specific weapons were mentioned in the FMS notification, it is expected that the F-35s will be armed with AIM-9X and AIM-120C-8 missiles, based on previous FMS approvals for these weapons. The first F-35s are not anticipated to be delivered before 2030.
This acquisition follows Romania’s recent purchase of 32 second-hand F-16 Block 20 fighter jets from Norway and the modernization of its existing F-16 fleet. The F-35s are expected to eventually replace the F-16s, which are projected to have a remaining service life of ten years.
The F-35, a fifth-generation fighter jet, has become a popular choice for NATO allies and international partners. It currently operates from 32 bases worldwide with over 1,000 aircraft in service. The aircraft boasts significant interoperability with other NATO forces, allowing for seamless integration of maintenance and operations across different air bases.
The Romanian Air Force’s acquisition of the F-35 is expected to further bolster its capabilities and contribute to the overall security of the region.
