Sun Sep 15 13:48:17 UTC 2024: ## India Suffers 0-4 Davis Cup Defeat to Sweden, Falling Short of Upset Bid

Stockholm, Sweden – India’s Davis Cup hopes were dashed on Sunday as they suffered a comprehensive 0-4 loss to Sweden in the World Group I tie. Despite a depleted squad and a valiant effort, the Indians couldn’t overcome their Swedish opponents, falling to their sixth consecutive defeat against the Nordic nation.

The doubles match, which India needed to win to stay alive, proved to be their undoing. Ramkumar Ramanathan and N Sriram Balaji, despite showing flashes of brilliance, were ultimately outplayed by the Swedish duo of Andre Goransson and Filip Bergevi, losing 3-6, 4-6.

In the inconsequential reverse singles, debutant Siddharth Vishwakarma was unable to make his mark, falling 2-6, 2-6 to Elias Ymer.

The loss means India will now compete in the Play-offs next year to retain their place in the World Group I.

While the team’s performance was commendable given the circumstances, the missed opportunities ultimately cost them dearly. The Indian pair had a chance to break serve early in the first set, but couldn’t capitalize. Despite a strong start in the second set, Ramkumar’s untimely error on Bergevi’s wide shot proved decisive.

Despite the defeat, the experience gained by the Indian team, especially Vishwakarma, will serve them well moving forward. The team will look to regroup and prepare for the Play-offs next year, aiming to secure their place in the top tier of Davis Cup competition.
