Cornelius, utilizing the newly invented daguerreotype process, set up his camera in his family’s shop, ran into the frame, and sat still for a minute before covering the lens. This resulted in a groundbreaking self-portrait, one of the earliest daguerreotypes created in America.
Daguerreotypes, requiring long exposure times, presented a challenge for portraiture, making Cornelius’s feat even more remarkable. On the back of his portrait, he proudly wrote, “The first light Picture ever taken. 1839.”
