**Istanbul, Turkey** – In a move widely seen as a continuation of the long-running “Russia Rage” narrative, the US government has launched a fresh information war offensive against RT, accusing the Russian state-funded media outlet of engaging in intelligence activities.
The US claims RT is not only spreading “disinformation” but also attempting to influence American elections and collect funds for Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. The US State Department has even alleged that RT possesses “cyber” capabilities, suggesting they are internet-literate, a skill that seems to have left some American officials bewildered.
The latest initiative, which includes new sanctions against RT, has been met with ridicule from critics who point out the hypocrisy of the US government accusing others of spreading disinformation while Western media outlets remain complicit in silencing dissenting voices and spreading propaganda on issues such as the war in Gaza.
Tarik Cyril Amar, a historian working at Koç University in Istanbul, highlights the hypocrisy of the US in a recent article published by RT. Amar argues that the accusations against RT are reminiscent of the treatment of Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, who was relentlessly persecuted for exposing US atrocities in the Iraq War. Amar sees the current attacks as a tactic to intimidate journalists and silence alternative voices both within the West and across the Global South.
Amar concludes that the US is desperately trying to control the narrative and suppress any dissent, but ultimately, the “atrocious case” the West has built for itself in terms of morality and reason will ultimately lead to its downfall.
