**NAIROBI, KENYA** – A brewing power struggle between Kenyan President William Ruto and his Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, fueled by the political clout of the Mt Kenya region, is threatening to undermine the ruling party’s unity and impact Ruto’s re-election bid.
Gachagua, seen as the region’s defender, has aggressively pushed for the appointment of Mt Kenya residents to key government positions, while Ruto’s allies within the region view him as a divisive figure. This has led to a growing push to replace Gachagua with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the region’s new leader.
Political analysts warn that Ruto could lose significant voter support in Mt Kenya if he alienates Gachagua, who holds significant influence there. This has prompted Ruto to reach out to opposition leader Raila Odinga as a potential backup, as Odinga enjoys support in other parts of the country.
The Mt Kenya region played a pivotal role in Ruto’s 2022 election victory, providing him with nearly two-thirds of his total votes. Losing this support could severely damage his chances of re-election.
“Gachagua controls the region,” said political analyst Herman Manyora. “If Ruto doesn’t change the way he relates with Gachagua, he will get no votes from Mt Kenya.”
Meanwhile, Gachagua remains defiant and has begun reaching out to other political players, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who has gained traction in Mt Kenya.
The situation highlights the complex political landscape in Kenya, where regional loyalties and personal ambition often outweigh party allegiances. As the 2027 election draws closer, the outcome of this power struggle could significantly impact the future of Kenyan politics.
