**RAMALLAH, PALESTINE** – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has announced plans to file a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the killing of Turkish-American activist Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi. Eygi, 26, was shot and killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on September 6th.
In a phone call to Eygi’s father, Mehmet Suat Eygi, Abbas expressed condolences to the Turkish people and described the slain activist as a “brave daughter of Palestine and Türkiye” who was “assassinated at the hands of the Israeli occupation.” Abbas also praised Eygi as a symbol of solidarity between Turkey and Palestine.
The Palestinian leadership, Abbas stated, has been working with US and Turkish authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into Eygi’s death. He further announced his decision to posthumously award Eygi the Medal of the Star of Jerusalem, in recognition of her dedication to the Palestinian cause.
Eygi had travelled to the region to support Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation. Her death sparked widespread outrage and grief in Turkey, where her funeral on September 14th was attended by numerous mourners, including politicians and activists advocating for Palestinian rights.
Turkish authorities, including Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, visited Eygi’s family to offer condolences. Initial autopsy findings revealed that a bullet struck Eygi in the head, causing a skull fracture, brain hemorrhage, and tissue damage.
Turkey has launched an investigation into the killing and has stated that it will press the United Nations to act.
