**Miami, FL** – The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) officer who placed Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill on administrative leave following a controversial traffic stop has been suspended multiple times during his career, police records show. Officer Danny Torres, who has been with the department for 27 years, was suspended at least six times, including a 20-day suspension in 2018 and a 10-day suspension in 2019. The reasons for the suspensions were not disclosed.
Torres also received four written reprimands between 1999 and 2020, as well as six complaints filed against him between 2004 and 2018. Four of these complaints alleged use of force, but only one was substantiated. The other complaints included accusations of improper procedures, body camera misuse, discourtesy, and conduct unbecoming.
Torres’ personnel file also indicates he employed a variety of force tactics, including pushing, pulling, striking, and hitting, from 2002 to 2022. Some of these incidents resulted in injuries, but the report does not specify who was injured.
Despite these disciplinary actions, Torres also received 35 commendations for “dedication of duty” and “professionalism.” He is currently seeking reinstatement.
The incident involving Hill, which involved tense interactions between police and two Dolphins teammates, has sparked public debate about law enforcement’s handling of traffic stops and their interactions with members of the public, particularly Black drivers.
Hill’s attorney, Julius B. Collins, has called on the MDPD to release more information about the suspensions, stating that “if you’re suspended at your place of employment six times, you’re terminated.” He expressed concerns about the potential implications of these suspensions and urged the department to address any issues related to use of force, abusive behavior, or language towards detainees.
