**SHAH ALAM, Sept 15, 2023** – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has clarified that non-Muslim food and beverage (F&B) companies in Malaysia are not required to obtain halal certification. While some non-Muslim F&B operators may choose to apply for halal certification, the government currently does not mandate it.
“There is no such decision by the cabinet,” Zahid emphasized, adding that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) to address the current status, proposals, and studies on halal issues this Wednesday.
The Deputy Prime Minister, who also serves as the chairman of the Malaysian Halal Council, stressed the importance of respecting other religions in a multicultural society like Malaysia. “In order for my religion to be respected, we must respect other religions too,” he said during his speech at the 78th MIC Annual General Assembly.
This statement follows recent discussions regarding mandatory halal certification for all food businesses. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar had previously suggested that several laws might need to be amended to enforce mandatory halal certification, requiring collaboration from multiple agencies.
Currently, halal certification remains optional for food business operators in Malaysia.
