Sun Sep 15 12:20:17 UTC 2024: ## Tax Deadline Looms: Over 920,000 South Africans Face Penalties

**Johannesburg, South Africa -** With just days remaining before the tax filing deadline, over 920,000 South African taxpayers are facing potential penalties for failing to submit their returns. The deadline for individual tax returns is **Monday, 23 October**, with provisional taxpayers having until January 24, 2024.

According to the South African Revenue Service (SARS), over 5 million taxpayers have already filed or been auto-assessed, but a significant number remain outstanding. Those who miss the deadline risk monthly penalties starting at R250.

SARS has already imposed penalties totaling R4.26 billion on 2.25 million taxpayers for outstanding returns from the 2021 and 2022 tax years. This underscores the seriousness with which the tax authority views compliance.

In a move to clamp down on tax evasion, SARS has been actively registering taxpayers for income tax based on third-party data indicating taxable income. Since October 2022, over 212,000 individuals have been auto-registered and notified via SMS and letter.

SARS also uses data from employers, banks, and other institutions to detect tax evasion and auto-assess taxpayers with simpler tax affairs.

However, even those who have been auto-assessed should verify their information on the SARS website, as outdated contact details could lead to missed notifications.

For those struggling to complete their returns, SARS offers the Help-You-eFile service, which has assisted over 121,000 taxpayers during the current filing season.

Experts warn that taxpayers should maintain comprehensive records, including those exceeding the five-year requirement, as SARS is increasingly scrutinizing financial transactions.

For those who have previously failed to disclose income or capital gains, the Voluntary Disclosure Programme (VDP) offers a way to regularize tax affairs and avoid penalties.

The looming tax deadline serves as a reminder of the importance of compliance. With SARS aggressively pursuing tax evaders and penalties on the rise, taxpayers are urged to file their returns before the deadline to avoid costly consequences.
