Sat Sep 14 22:53:54 UTC 2024: ## Coppola’s Ambitious “Megalopolis” Interactive Feature Scrapped Due to Amazon Layoffs

Francis Ford Coppola’s latest film, “Megalopolis,” almost featured an innovative interactive element that would have allowed audiences to engage directly with the film. The director envisioned a system where viewers could ask questions to Adam Driver’s character, Cesar, via voice recognition software. This software would then trigger a relevant response from Driver, making each viewing unique.

Amazon had even agreed to create a custom Alexa-based system for this purpose. However, the project was abandoned after a round of layoffs in 2022 resulted in the dismissal of the team working on it.

“Imagine!” Coppola exclaimed, “You could see ‘Megalopolis’ five times in its opening week and it would be different each time! It would have been the future of the movies and ancient theatre rolled into one!”

While the full interactive experience was scrapped, a simplified version was implemented in some screenings. At certain events, an usher asked a pre-determined question to Driver’s on-screen character, with the answer playing in the film.

This peculiar interaction was described by Vogue as a “strange pandemic-era Zoom press conference,” leaving viewers bewildered.

Despite the scrapped interactive feature, “Megalopolis” is now playing in theaters. Reviews are mixed, with some critics praising Coppola’s ambitious vision while others find it underwhelming.
