Sun Sep 15 15:45:40 UTC 2024: ## Hugh Grant Blasts London’s Decline, Sparking Debate Over Labour’s Role

British actor Hugh Grant has sparked controversy by questioning who is responsible for the decline of London, a city governed by the Labour Party, a party he has personally campaigned for.

In a tweet, Grant lamented London’s current state, describing it as “dug up, coned, paralysed, miserable” and asking for someone to blame. This prompted a response from the youth political organisation Turning Point UK, who quipped: “Your Labour mates.”

The Labour Party has indeed been in control of London for the past eight years under Mayor Sadiq Khan. While Grant has been associated with the Liberal Democrats, he has also campaigned for Labour, including in the 2019 general election.

Since Labour took power in 2016, London has experienced a decline in several areas, most notably safety. According to the Office for National Statistics, knife crime in London has risen significantly, with 14,626 recorded incidents last year, a 2,481 increase from 2022. This translates to roughly 40 knife crime incidents per day.

The surge in knife crime represents a 38% increase since Mayor Khan took office in 2016, leading to concerns about the effectiveness of Labour’s governance in addressing London’s safety concerns.

Grant’s tweet has ignited a debate about the responsibility for London’s current state, drawing attention to the challenges facing the city under Labour’s leadership.
