Sun Sep 15 03:19:51 UTC 2024: ## Italian Deputy PM Salvini Faces Six-Year Prison Sentence for Blocking Migrant Rescue Ship

**Palermo, Italy** – Italian prosecutors are seeking a six-year prison sentence for Matteo Salvini, the country’s far-right deputy prime minister, for his actions in 2019 when he prevented a charity ship carrying 147 rescued migrants from disembarking at an Italian port.

Salvini, who was the Interior Minister at the time, is accused of deprivation of liberty and abuse of office. The prosecution argues that Salvini’s decision to keep the Open Arms ship at sea for nearly three weeks, despite deteriorating conditions onboard, violated human rights and constituted a breach of duty.

The trial, which began in October 2021, is nearing its end and a verdict is expected next month. Salvini has denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that he was acting in the best interests of Italy and its citizens by enforcing a strict “closed ports” policy against illegal immigration.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Salvini’s coalition partner, has also criticized the prosecution’s request for a six-year sentence, stating that it is “incredible” for a minister to face such punishment for “doing his job defending the nation’s borders.”

The prosecution’s case hinges on the argument that Salvini’s actions, which included rejecting multiple requests from the Open Arms ship for a safe port, prioritized national sovereignty over human rights. Witnesses have testified to the dire conditions onboard the ship, including a scabies outbreak, and the psychological distress of the rescued migrants.

Salvini has previously faced a similar trial for a similar incident in 2019 but was acquitted in 2021. This latest trial has focused on determining whether the decision-making process rested solely with Salvini or involved the then-Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

The case has drawn international attention and sparked debate about the balance between national security and the protection of migrants’ human rights. Salvini has vowed to continue his fight against illegal immigration, while the prosecution has called for a strong message to be sent against those who violate basic human rights in the pursuit of political gain.
