MANILA, Philippines – Renowned cardiologist and health advocate Dr. Willie Ong, popularly known as “Doc Willie,” has announced he is battling a rare form of cancer called sarcoma. The tumor, measuring 16 centimeters, was discovered in his stomach, deeply hidden behind his heart and in front of his spine.
Ong, who has been sharing his health journey with his millions of followers on social media, revealed the diagnosis in a video message recorded from his hospital bed abroad. He explained that the sarcoma, which develops in connective tissue like muscle and bone, is a very rare form of cancer with limited research and available treatments.
Ong first noticed symptoms in April 2023 while on medical missions, experiencing difficulty breathing, swallowing, and persistent fatigue. He initially attributed these symptoms to aging, but persistent back pain that began in October led to a hospital visit in August.
The doctor, who has been undergoing treatment in an undisclosed hospital abroad, believes that stress may have played a role in developing the cancer. Despite the difficult diagnosis, Ong remains optimistic, emphasizing that he is happy as long as his illness has a purpose.
